Williams was founded in 1977 by Frank Williams and engineer Patrick Head, running a customer March in its first season before building its own cars from 1978. Based in Grove, Oxfordshire, it became one of Formula 1's great powers, winning nine constructors' championships between 1980 and 1997 and seven drivers' titles with Alan Jones, Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve.
The team's most recent win came at the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix with Pastor Maldonado. Following its sale to US investment firm Dorilton Capital in 2020, Williams began a long-term rebuild, and in 2025 Carlos Sainz's third place in Azerbaijan brought its first podium since 2021 as the team finished fifth in the constructors' standings. It uses Mercedes power units.
